Weekly Announcements for August 20, 2017

Good Evening,

This is Mrs. Cox calling with the weekly announcements.

On tomorrow, August 21, 2017, a rare total solar eclipse will pass over North Carolina. The last total solar eclipse that was seen from coast to coast was June 1918.

I wanted to take just a moment to share some information and tips for viewing the eclipse safely. While we will not see a 100% total eclipse in Wilson County, we can expect to see an approximate 90% eclipse.

Reports are saying the eclipse will start around 1:18 p.m., peak at 2:46 p.m., and end around 4:07 p.m. I want to encourage you to speak to your children about not looking at the sun before and after the eclipse while they are on the bus tomorrow afternoon.

Please note:

·         The eclipse is only safe to look at during the approximately 2-3 minutes when the moon is in front of the sun.

·         Looking at the sun before and after the eclipse without special eye protection can damage the retina of your eye.

·         Regular sunglasses are not safe to use.

·         If you buy eclipse glasses, make sure they indicate ISO 12312-2 compliant .

·         While camera technology has come a long way with the smartphones, they were never designed to take images of the sun and moon and can be damaging to your eyes.

I will be speaking to students about this again tomorrow, but please speak to them tonight about not looking directly at the sun tomorrow on their ride home to ensure their safety.

On Tuesday, many students will receive a new class schedule, due to not being able to find a part-time Health & PE teacher, and due to hiring an Advanced Manufacturing Teacher. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause your child, but I believed it is in the best interest of the children to change their schedule before it becomes late into the semester. The new schedule will begin on Tuesday.

Students will receive bag lunches on Wednesday and Friday of this week due to the cafeteria staff’s participation in district wide meetings.

By Friday, students will receive their new bus assignment forms for the shuttling schedule that will begin on Monday, August 28th.

If you have any questions, feel free to call the school at 252-265-4038.

Thank you, and have a great evening!
